The Columbus Blue Jackets began NHL play in 2000 after a campaign led by businessman John H. McConnell helped secure an expansion franchise for central Ohio. Their arrival gave the city a major league hockey team and helped establish Nationwide Arena as the centre of a new sporting district. The name drew on Ohio's Civil War history, connecting a young professional organisation with an older regional identity rather than borrowing the nickname of an earlier NHL club.
Building a competitive team proved difficult. Early contributors such as Geoff Sanderson, David Vyborny, and Ron Tugnutt gave supporters recognisable players while the organisation learned the demands of an established league. Rick Nash changed the team's possibilities after Columbus selected him first overall in 2002. His strength, reach, and scoring ability supplied a genuine star. Sharing the league's goal-scoring lead in 2003-04 brought Nash the Rocket Richard Trophy and gave the franchise an important individual achievement.
The first playoff appearance arrived in 2009 under coach Ken Hitchcock. Rookie goaltender Steve Mason earned the Calder Trophy that season, adding another marker of progress. Detroit swept the postseason series, but the qualification itself mattered to supporters who had waited through years of rebuilding. It demonstrated that Columbus could become part of the NHL's central competitive story, not merely a market where more established teams occasionally visited. The experience also raised expectations for what sustained improvement should mean.
Another generation developed around players including Nick Foligno, Cam Atkinson, Boone Jenner, Seth Jones, Zach Werenski, and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Under John Tortorella, Columbus built a more demanding competitive identity. The 2016-17 season included an extended winning streak and a strong regular-season finish. Bobrovsky's outstanding goaltending brought major individual recognition, while the group helped supporters imagine success as the product of a resilient team rather than dependence on one exceptional forward.
The defining playoff breakthrough came in 2019. Columbus swept Tampa Bay, which had finished the regular season with the Presidents' Trophy, to win a postseason series for the first time. Artemi Panarin and Matt Duchene added attacking quality, while the whole team sustained an upset few had anticipated. Nationwide Arena's cannon and the crowd known as the Fifth Line became part of the atmosphere surrounding that achievement. The victory supplied a shared reference point that retained meaning beyond the roster assembled for one spring.
Columbus's history also contains profound losses, including the deaths of Matiss Kivlenieks and Johnny Gaudreau. Those moments revealed the human relationships underlying a professional team and the importance of a community capable of grieving together. The Blue Jackets' legacy cannot be measured solely through postseason advancement. It also includes the growth of local hockey, McConnell's commitment to civic involvement, and the creation of traditions that newcomers could make their own. The franchise represents central Ohio's continuing place in the sport, shaped by perseverance, memorable individuals, collective sorrow, and the conviction that a developing history deserves to be valued on its own terms. Columbus retired Nash's number 61 in 2022, recognising his foundational importance.
