Utah's NHL franchise was established in 2024 through an unusual arrangement. Smith Entertainment Group acquired Arizona's hockey assets, including players and draft rights, while the NHL created a new Utah franchise. The distinction matters: a transferred roster did not automatically transfer the Coyotes' historical records. Ryan and Ashley Smith brought the team to Salt Lake City, where the opening season used the temporary Utah Hockey Club name. Its history began with the difficult work of establishing a permanent home and identity.
The 2024–25 season gave supporters a first set of experiences rather than an inherited championship tradition. Clayton Keller became captain, while familiar teammates from Arizona entered a markedly different setting. General manager Bill Armstrong and coach Andre Tourigny provided continuity in the hockey operation. Delta Center, already associated with the Utah Jazz, became the site of the new club's home games. Players and fans were learning together what an NHL season in Utah would feel like.
Choosing a permanent name became an important part of that relationship. In May 2025, the organization unveiled Utah Mammoth after a process involving several rounds of community voting. The identity drew on prehistoric animals associated with the state, combining a charging mammoth with mountain imagery. Light blue, black and white connected the permanent uniforms with the opening season. The result gave supporters a name, symbol and rallying language around which future memories could accumulate.
The early sporting story included a young core rather than a ready-made dynasty. Keller, Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther offered different expressions of attacking skill, while Mikhail Sergachev brought experience from championship teams in Tampa Bay. The point of identifying those figures is not to promise what they would achieve. They helped make the new team recognizable as a group of people, giving supporters particular performances and developing partnerships to follow beyond the broader excitement of receiving a franchise. Its first playoff appearance in 2026 added another important milestone, extending the story beyond arrival, naming and the opening season.
Infrastructure formed another part of the foundation. The organization developed training facilities and plans for an improved arena experience while introducing a professional hockey presence to the region. That work matters because a franchise's roots depend on more than its opening-night reception. Practice spaces, staff, youth participation and repeated community encounters can turn novelty into a lasting institution. Utah's early choices established the conditions in which a wider hockey culture could grow alongside the NHL team.
The Mammoth's legacy should therefore be described as emerging, with its own boundaries and possibilities. Arizona's supporters and earlier Winnipeg teams have histories that deserve accurate treatment, not casual absorption into a new badge. Utah's contribution is the establishment of a different local relationship with major professional hockey. The temporary first-year identity, public naming process and transition into permanent colors already form a coherent beginning. Its long-term meaning will come from the sporting achievements, relationships and shared experiences built in Utah, rather than from borrowed accomplishments that belong to another franchise's record book.
